    Laura,

I thought your state was California.

If you are a student, all I can say is if you aren't on the same side as me you should be unless you want your future to be pushing a button on digital audio.  I really don't think that is good enough for you and I don't want you to find out too late.  I know it is not good enough for those in this state.  There is some audio in each state but some states are being overwhelmed by it.

    Lisa,

Under the User Settings, Realtime tab, Output formats, that is where you can "Add" StenoLink as the output format.  This is very generic because the next step depends on whether you're using a cable, wireless, or a network (my preference is the network).

Then on the Scopist's computer, they choose under User settings, Input option is Eclipse StenoLink.

If you use a network hub, you can then "path" the scopist back to your laptop under their Auxilliary Folder and they can actually listen to the audio while they are editing.  Again, I'm being very, very generic here because, while it is simple for me to set up, a first-timer sometimes has difficulty.

Once you're set up, you're good to go.  Under the network setting, I've been able to provide a finished product within as little as 30 minutes to as long as about an hour to hour and a half after writing all day.  That ain't bad for an ol' country boy.  If you're on your game and your scopist is on their game, it should go really smoothly.  And with the scopist having AudioSync access all the time, it is great.

One thing that has worked well for my scopist is to edit as much as they can right on top of me as I'm writing and put "carats" on areas that they need to check later.  Then, when there's a recess, they can go back and check those areas, because normally the areas to check are regarding a case style or a name that might have been unfamiliar, or, it's just an area that needs to be re-checked.

Hope that kind of gets ya going on the right track.  Again, Dorothy has spelled this out and guarantees one hundred percent connection.  Right, Dorothy???  Back me up here, ma'am.  (Was gonna say "back me up, girl" but didn't want to disrespect ya)

    Shari,

Oh, I'm sure it's being called anything but chili right now. LOL

But, on that note, what I will say is that any reporter, whether freelance or in a courtroom setting, if an attorney walks in in this day and age and they can't provide realtime to them or won't because their "dictionary isn't built up," or whatever excuse they have, especially a reporter with five or ten years or more of reporting, I say.......well, I better just leave it at that and let someone else fill in the blanks.  I've done enough damage today and will spend the next several days, if not weeks, trying to turn this mess around and gain some respect back.  I've totally lost it today with many.

Let me finally say regarding my "Grass is greener" statement that is on the bottom of my signature line and add a little more to it after today's thoughts.

Reporters, when you have green grass in your yard, people want to come into it and enjoy it.  When your yard becomes a mess and not kept nice and pretty anymore, that is when others may want to help you fix it back up.  Let's not let our yards become a mess or to the point where someone else comes in to fix our yard.  Let's keep all of our yards nice and kept so that others won't have a reason to want to come clean it up......figuratively speaking, of course.

You may be right. Thus far I've not heard any compelling arguments to stifle discussion, which as I think about it, is really the issue at the moment.  Right now, I am on the side of a full, frank, and fair discussion so that I, and others, can understand the issues and make up my/our minds based on reasoned consideration.  I find believing something because someone else believes it always results in me being tentative and questioning my decision as time goes on.

I don't disagree.  Are you suggesting that time has come?  As best I can tell, right now the only issue is whether we should be discussing the issue of how NCRA responds to the emerging technology. I assume the time hasn't come to stop discussing the issue.  Perhaps I am missing something(won't be the first time.)

    Breck,

Thank you for this response.  I've printed it out so we can study it.  I have the attention span of a gnat this morning.  Too many projects at once!  And then there's the courtroom.

Lillian, I'm certainly in agreement with you, but isn't that Dorothy?  Has she been tinkering with her Forum persona? Geeked  I've tweaked mine a bit.  Accidents happen!

    Lisa,

It was after my post that I was told it was Dorothy.   But how in the world would anyone know that?

Soooo, Dorothy, please post with your full name or the post will be deleted.

    Lil,

I knew it because I had read her post earlier and remembered it was her.  Also, under the Users, if you look up DMB, you can see what other threads she has posted in, and it's her wonderful, informative posts.  It also shows North Carolina.

    Laura,

I think we are past discussion and probably know definitely which side we are on.  We are probably beginning to sound like that bird  "Pete, Repeat" and sayng the same things over and over.  I am definitely on the side of the fence that thinks we should not allow ER in our association.  Who uses it in the marketplace I feel is their business.  It is up to the individual states to keep this out.  We just cannot have our association involved and hurting the states in any way.

What state are you in?  You might have stated this but I don't remember.

Doesn't matter, Janice.  I'm not about to, nor should anyone else have to research who's posting here.  The forum rules are what they are.  Posts without full names will be deleted.   I've asked a couple of times now to have her remedy it, but to no avail, I see.

    Lillian,

I agree with you.  A person who only excels at passing test does not a good reporter make.  Attitude is way up at the top and professionalism in dress.

We should all remember that the first impression means a lot.  I was at the firmowners' conference this weekend.  I saw this woman that was impeccably dressed.  She just looked so professional.  I decided I was going to find out what firm she was with because you would certainly think about referring work to a firm that had such professional appearance.  Well, the session started and this was not a reporter at all but our motivational speaker.

You are going to be interested to know, Lillian, that we had breakout session to discussion topics of interest.  Kathy DiLorenzo was over our breakout session and did a very good job of moderating.  What was interesting to me was the fact that many count the incentive gift giving as one of our biggest problems.  They were calling it a kickback among other things when you give something knowing definitely that you are going to get something in return.

We probably need to keep talking about names we see on the internert that are doing this type of incentive gift giving.  Many of us would not refer an assignment to someone who did that so perhaps it is important to get their name on the Forum.  We should also thank them when they remove these things from the internet.  What do you think?

Don't you always wonder about the quality of work and the quality of reporters when they can't get work any other way than to buy it?

    Lil,

I was only answering your question you posed:

"It was after my post that I was told it was Dorothy.   But how in the world would anyone know that?"

Maybe it was a rhetorical question and you didn't mean for me to answer it.   Why do I feel like you're jumping down my throat?  ;)
