Thanks for pointing that out, Rhonda.  Same thing happened with me.  I'd bet you dollars to donuts you haven't lost anything.

    Cindy:

    1) Just to be clear, there is no such thing as a feature called "autosave," only AutoRecover and Keep AutoRecover Files in Archive.  By default both are selected.  If both are selected, then you should have a case in Manage Jobs called AutoArchive which has the last created AutoRecover files for ALL of your jobs (until and unless you elect to delete them).

    2) I'm curious why you're having so many "freezes" -- that should not be happening.  If you haven't contacted Tech Support to troubleshoot that, please do so ASAP!  Ultimately you want to NOT to freeze in the first place -- there's really no reason you should expect to experience abnormal exits from your files.

    3) There have already been a couple of updates to Version 9, so at your earliest convenience, please click Start, Programs, Stenograph, Case CATalyst Updater and update to Version 9.03.

As Rhonda and Candis have suggested, please carefully double check the contents of your AutoRecovered files.  It does not make sense that you would be "missing" pages if AutoRecover is selected and set to 30 seconds.

Cynthia, as soon as I installed version 9.0 of Case I have had repeated instances of my realtime screen freezing up.  I called tech support and they said they hadn't heard of this problem with Version 9 and that I should check the cable, the port that it's connected to on my computer, etc.  I have not been able to find any problems with my equipment but continue to have the realtime screen freeze up.  If you get any further information on this I'd really appreciate it if you'd share it with me.  It's making realtime a nightmare.

I too have been having an issue with the realtime feed stopping since upgrading Version 9.03.   In my situation, it only occurs when my Stentura 8000LX has stopped the realtime feed to the computer in order to write data to the diskette.  Occasionally, when the writer should begin to send data to the computer again, the realtime feed just does not continue.

My situation doesn't really involve what I would call a "screen freeze," as the Audiosync volume meter is still active, the "reporter's area" is still highlighted, and the cursor is blinking.   Audio does continue to record until autopause kicks in.  I do get the "not responding" message in the title bar once I click on the CC window, though.  Other programs on the computer are completely functional.

So far, I have not experienced realtime failure after switching the Stentura to diskless mode.

I've been meaning to post to ask if this is happening to others.  Tech Support says it's  the Stentura disk drive, the diskettes, the cable, anything but CC.  It's certainly possible that it is hardware-related in my case, but it's just odd that my rig has performed in a rock-solid manner since purchasing my current notebook computer in June of last year and then suddenly malfunctions after the update to 9.03.  (All seemed well after the initial update to 9.01, but I really had only used that for a week before 9.03 was made available.)  I know coincidences happen, but I'll be investing a little more time into troubleshooting this situation, including possibly returning to an earlier CC version.

To the others who have posted here, and anyone else having a realtime feed issue, I'm just curious about what is happening regarding your equipment or realtime display, if anything, when your realtime feed stops.

Issue while writing to Stentura LX diskette

    Jeff:

To the best of my knowledge, the only change made to tran & edit for version 9.03 was an enhancement to a Print function (allowing hotspots or hidden text entered during tran and edit or edit to print to PDF).  I'm curious what port you use for connecting the writer to the computer -- if it's COM1 via a serial connection, and if so, if the same port is designated for PDF printing.  Possibly changing the designation for PDF printing might resolve a sporadic realtime connection issue.

    1. Close Case CATalyst.
    2. Click Start, Settings, Printers & Faxes.
    3. Right click the Stenograph PDF Printer and select Properties.
    4. In the Stenograph PDF Printer Properties dialog box, click the Ports tab.
    5. If you use COM1 for realtime and don’t use any other COM ports for other realtime communication (e.g. COM2 to output to CaseView), click the box next to COM2.  If you use a COM port to output to CaseView or other realtime receive software, select a higher COM port option.
    6. Click OK and close the Printers and Faxes window.
    7. Start CATalyst - test connection and ability to print to PDF.

Another thing to check would be to make sure that you have the most current version of software (1.05, assuming you have a revision G board installed; serial #8039835 or higher) installed on your Stentura 8000LX.

    Kim:

Please see my post to Jeff, and if you haven't already taken those steps to designate a different COM port for printing to PDF, please do so.  If you have done this and continue to experience problems, please call Tech Support and continue to have them assist you with troubleshooting.

    Re: losing work

    Cindi,

Thank you for the suggestion.  I have changed the port for the Stenograph PDF port and I'll see how that works out.  The Stenograph PDF Printer was assigned to a Microsoft Imaging port, so it didn't seem to conflict with my realtime COM assignments, but who knows.

Thanks again.  Your assistance is always appreciated.

    Re: losing work

    Cynthia,

I had been having loads of freeze-ups and figured out where they were stemming from, which I thought you may want to look into.  I was always thankful that CaseCATalyst had an auto recovery file that backed up my work, although the freeze-up drove me wild and took loads of precious time to reboot the system.  My freeze-ups were stemming from my virus software.  Once I turned off my SpySweeper, no more freeze-ups.  I still run sweeps, but while working on transcripts I keep it turned off.

Re: Issue while writing to Stentura LX diskette

    Cindi,

If I do what you suggested about the ports, can I have the pdf write to file?  I did change it to print to file, and the hotspots work and my realtime works, at least in a five minute test.  I use the PCMCIA card for output to attorneys, so I don't know what port that is.  That's why I'm uncomfortable messing with my ports. Everything works so smoothly now, except I get the same thing: not a freeze, but the realtime just doesn't work, and I have a Mira, but the testimony isCool always on the Mira, no problem, and the audio goes for a little bit, so I haven't lost anything.  Hope this helps.  Very stressful.  I do a lot of medical, so it's hard to be watching to see if it's going to stop.

Anyway,  thanks, and that's my hopefully easy question.

    Peggy,

I'm still trying to sort out the same issue that you are having.  I was just curious what kind of connection you are using from your Mira to your realtime computer.  Is it wireless, USB-to-serial adapter, or serial cable with no adapter?

Re: Issue while writing to Stentura LX diskette

    Jeff,

I just use the USB cord. No adapter or anything.  It worked wonderfully for almost four years now.  So, I hope the port thing fixes the problem.  I have wireless for the Mira, and I may go to that if this doesn't get fixed.  For some reason I just don't want to.  Seems like a hassle, but I know people seem to like the wireless.  Good luck.

Re: Issue while writing to Stentura LX diskette

    Peggy:

The directions I posted have to do with making sure you can both print to PDF and communicate via COM port for realtime.  There should be no reason why you can't print to PDF and communicate wirelessly via a Mira, so if you are having any difficulty, please contact Tech Support for assistance.

    Re: losing work

For those connecting to realtime via a USB-to-serial adapter and serial cable for realtime, I learned this morning that Tech Support and Development have discovered and been able to sporadically reproduce an issue with a serial realtime connection when there is a combination of the  latest updates from Windows, updated drivers for USB-to-serial adapters and the realtime cable is (purposely or accidentally) disconnected and reconnected.

FYI, there is no difference in the code between version 8 and 9 that causes this; so it is not related to updating to Version 9.  Development can reproduce the same issues in Version 8 if we run it on the same system that has the driver update and or Windows update.

They are still working on identifying the specific combination of factors that will cause the issue.  In the meantime, there is no particular action to take, other than to ensure a tight connection.

If and as you experience any issue with a realtime serial connection, please contact Tech Support to report the issue.
