    Receive JCR by E-mail Only?

    To the powers that be,

Is there any way to opt out of receiving the JCR by regular mail? I really would prefer to read the PDF version only. Thanks in advance.

    Best regards, Priscilla

    Priscilla,

You can opt out of receiving the print version of the magazine. People sometimes do when, for example, more than one member is at one address and they elect to share.

We are working on making the digital version of the magazine more user friendly. Even compressing it several times, it is a large document, in the range of 16 MB. The compression tends to degrade the quality of the illustrations, although the type maintains a reasonable quality. We also are looking at digital publishing options developed by outside vendors that retain image quality and offer other usability benefits.

Traditional publishing and digital publishing definitely are crossing paths. You'll see more on this from NCRA in the coming months. Meanwhile, I'll set your record to indicate you do not want to receive the magazine by mail. (Labels for the July issue are already sent to the printer, so this won't start until the following issue.) If you change your mind, just drop a note to msic@ncrahq.org and they will take care of it.

    Regards,

    Marshall

Thank you, Marshall, for taking care of that for me. I appreciate it very much.

I hope that whatever format the JCR ultimately takes that it will still be possible to search the text easily. If the text is converted into an image or can't be searched easily, it sort of defeats the purpose of having the magazine in a digital format. Personally, I like the PDF format. In addition, I think most people are familiar with it and are comfortable using it. I've seen other digital formats online that I've found much less appealing. And to me, a 16MB file isn't all that big. I've got a 12G thumb drive that I keep with me at all times.

    Best regards, Priscilla

Priscilla, you can download the JCR in searchable PDF format by going here.

Thanks, Jason, for that. I've got the PDFs already.

What I was commenting on was the fact that Marshall said they were looking at "digital publishing options." I just want those reviewing the options to keep in mind that the final product, whatever its form, would be a more valuable tool for readers if the text can be searched. I've seen some versions of "digital magazines" whose text could not be searched and were, moreover, very clumsy to navigate through. That's all.

Ah, understood. And I thought I was being smart with the link.

It's a whole interest developing world of choices out there, not just with publishing and its consumption but so many other things. And often, the challenge is how to provide these choices with ever more limited resources. But that's a topic for another time.
