    Vista 64 Bit

I've been looking for a new computer and all I find are Vista 64 bit.  It seems computers are being loaded with the 64 bit.  I found one at Best Buy of a cheaper model with 32 bit.

Cindi, anyone, is there any hope that SG will be able to soon making CC available to run on 64 bit?

    Ed,

I ran into the same problem -- hard as heck to find a 32-bit o/s.  I bought a 64-bit without knowing it was compatible, and then I had to return it a few days later.

I did find two 32-bits that I liked, one a Sony and one a Toshiba.  HP also had one as well, but I wasn't "in love" with it.  I really liked the Sony, and I have had a Sony laptop since '03 so I was confident in its stability, but unfortunately, they didn't have any in stock and I needed it right.then.and.there.  Anyway, I ended up with the Toshiba and so far, I'm very happy with it.

Good luck in your computer hunt.  I too am curious, though, as to whether Stenograph will be making CC updates that are 64-bit compatible.

    Sarah,

I remembered reading your post on this issue when I started shopping, and thanks for making me aware, and then amazed to find how so quickly all computer manufacturers are loading 64 bit.  I'd even buy a computer, plus a new Vista OS, if I could get it in 32 bit.  Right now, I'm working on my Apple computer with XP.  My computers have decided that this was the week to drive me nuts and keep shutting down.  My son tells me he thinks it a HD gone bad.

    Hi Cindi, and welcome back.

I am very pleased with all the enhancements Catalyst has, and very much like the Brief It while writing RT.  Thank the developer/programmers.

If it is possible to go with the 64 Bit, great.  If not, I can wait.

    Thanks,

    Ed

Me too, Ed!  I love the way it shows you what you already have as well as suggesting new briefs.

    Ed:

I'll pass along your thanks to the development department; they'll very much appreciate hearing that you're pleased with the enhancements.

Re your question about 64-bit:  Development is currently working on CATalyst drivers (e.g. for the security device, for elan and fusion/Protege writer USB, etc.) that will work with 64-bit Vista; I do not have an estimate as to when those drivers will be available.  We understand that the "big box" stores are popular sources for computer hardware because of price, availability/convenience and repair access, however our advice to our customers at this point would be to avoid purchasing a system with 64-bit preinstalled.  There are still many resources available offering 32-bit installation.  If 64-bit hardware is purchased, our advice at this point would be either to return the system if possible for one preinstalled with 32-bit Vista, or, if a full-version Windows Vista CD is available (either included with the purchase or purchased separately), it's possible that the operating system can be re-installed as 32-bit.

It's important to also note that once there are 64-bit versions of CATalyst drivers available, there may still be other concerns with using a computer with a 64-bit OS presintalled; there will likely be other peripherals and software applications that will require 64-bit driver udates that may not yet be available.  You'd have to check with the vendors for each peripheral and/or software application prior to attempting to use it and/or install it with that OS.  Also, it's probably a good idea to anticipate that some 3rd party vendors may charge to make their hardware or software compatible with 64-bit -- I recall that when Blue Soleil came out with an update to their Bluetooth solution for Vista, they charged a fee for that update.

So for the immediate future, our advice will continue to be to stick with 32-bit.

    Cindi,

When I was discussing with the Best Buy salesman he mentioned that a lot of companies did not have the drivers ready for 64 bit.  And, like buying anything with the latest, it takes time to shake out the bugs.  My wife has an HP that is perfectly fine for CC, and she said if I wanted to buy Her a new computer, I can have hers.  Oh, yes, she would like to have the pretty wide screen like they have in Best Buy.  Okay, she's the best and she deserves a new one.
