Hello everyone, I am considering Court Reporting as a second career/career switch (I'm 40 and have been until recently, an Executive Personal Assistant in the Financial Services industry for 20 years. I last tested at "QWERTY" keyboard typing at 75-88 wpm--but believe me I haven't tested for some time!) I believe that I would like to pursue a career as a captionist or scopist, and understand that the foundation is the same--I need to have the fundamentals of Court Reporting to pursue either, is that correct? I've been doing quite a bit of research and was so happy when I cam upon this site. All of you have given such great insight, suggestions and advice here about the in and out of the profession. Thanks for this--I'm sure I will become a regular poster! I know opinions will vary greatly, but I would love to get as much info as I can on how everyone feels about attending "traditional" schools for Court Reporting vs. "at home" study. I've read a few posts here regarding the Court Reporting At Home course and I have been comparing that to the course offered at my local School, The Stenotype Institute of Jacksonville (FL). Has anyone attended there? Time and availability is not a huge issue, I have the discipline and the availabilty to do either (classroom or at home). Of course, the pricing issue is a factor. For those of you who elected at home study, and are actively working in your career, what were and how did you execute your next steps (after completing/graduation?) The institute helps with iconnecting students with nternships, etc. How do home study students connect with that network.? Will a home study diploma carry the same "weight" ? I in no way mean to offend, I'm simply trying to gather as much information as I can because every legit site I've seen, says that completion of the course can take 2-3 years, but one online (distance learning) course says that it can be done in 7 months! C'mon!! can that be possible? (Btw that was found on the National Institute of Real Time Reporting--does anyone know anything about that and can you verify?) Any informationn you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, Toni
